Sixty-nine Democratic and Independent lawmakers in the U.S. Congress have appealed to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, demanding that he pressure Israel to release Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, who has been held in Israeli detention for over 500 days without charges being filed. Abu Safiya was arrested in December 2024, and the IDF claims he is suspected of involvement in terrorist activity, a claim he and his family strongly deny. The lawmakers stated in the letter that 'nothing exempts any government from the obligation to provide basic medical care and due process to detainees.'
