Israeli indicted in US: defrauded companies hit by cyberattacks, pocketed millions

|
Zohar Pinhasi, a 50-year-old Israeli-American who owns a cybersecurity company in Florida, has been indicted in the United States for defrauding companies that fell victim to ransomware attacks. According to the indictment, his company MonsterCloud promised to restore files locked by hackers without paying them by using advanced decryption methods. In reality, Pinhasi secretly paid the attackers for the decryption keys and charged clients significantly higher amounts. In one case, he paid a hacker about $8,200 and billed the client approximately $150,000. The prosecution claims that hundreds of companies paid him more than $19 million.
