Microsoft announced layoffs of approximately 4,800 positions, representing about 2.1% of its global workforce. The Xbox division is hit the hardest, losing about one-fifth of its employees. The cuts come against the backdrop of a decline in the company's stock, which was the weakest among tech giants in 2026, dropping 19% as of last Friday's close. Amy Coleman, the company's Chief Human Resources Officer, wrote to employees that "artificial intelligence is not replacing the laid-off employees, but emphasized that it is changing the way work is done, and therefore employees must continue to learn and develop new skills."
