Former defender Shimon Chernoha, who played most of his career at Beitar Jerusalem and also at Maccabi Netanya — with whom he won a championship — has died at age 78. The club mourned: "Beitar lost a symbol today." Chernoha was considered one of the pillars of the yellow-and-blacks and was the first player from the team to play for the Israeli national team. He grew up in Beitar's youth department and in 1966 made his first senior appearance for the club. In 1971, he moved to Maccabi Netanya, where he played for two years and won the 1970/71 championship, the only title of his career.
