The Health Ministry published a document stating that "fishing must be prohibited in the treatment radius and in the buffer zone of the first kilometer from shore," following the spraying of chemicals in an attempt to combat algae that caused the shutdown of desalination facilities. According to the document, revealed on Channel 13 News, "the recommendation to ban fishing in the buffer zone as well stems both from the sea current dynamics observed on the first day of treatment, and from the fact that there is insufficient information about the algae strains. There is a risk that these may be algae dangerous to humans (such as Microcystis and Cylindrospermopsis), which also exist in the Mediterranean Sea region. These strains contain cyanotoxins, which cause damage to the liver and various other organs."
