Benjamin Hasin, a 51-year-old Israeli citizen who was sentenced to death by hanging in Iraqi Kurdistan, will be released from prison after the court canceled his sentence. Hasin was arrested in 2015 after being involved in a fight in which a local taxi driver was killed, and in 2020 he was sentenced to death by hanging - a sentence that could be reversed through a "sulha" (reconciliation) with the victim's family. A delegation including Jewish representatives and lawyers traveled to Iraqi Kurdistan and paid the victim's family $250,000 in compensation raised through donations, and family members signed an official forgiveness document. Israeli-American attorney Alan Dershowitz was among those who led the efforts in Europe and the United States.
