New York City Mayor Zuhran Maddani has for the first time required the city's police department to obtain his prior approval before deploying the unit that handles protests. The new policy was first revealed in Politico just days after the unit, which Maddani had promised to completely disband during his election campaign following arrests of pro-Palestinian protesters, carried out arrests of activists who demonstrated against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech at the UN General Assembly last week. In response to criticism about the unit's future, Maddani said, 'I promised and I will keep it, the only question is the timeline.'
