Moscow released former U.S. Marine Robert Gilman, 32, who had been imprisoned in Russia since 2022. American officials told Reuters that Russian President Vladimir Putin approved a pardon for Gilman on humanitarian grounds due to his illness. The White House and State Department had urged Moscow to release him so he could receive medical treatment in the U.S. American officials said Gilman was flown on a State Department plane from Russia to Washington Dulles International Airport. An American official who spoke with Gilman said he is able to walk and talk. Gilman was arrested on January 17, 2022, during a train journey while on his way to a meeting at the U.S. Embassy, and Russia claims he kicked a police officer while intoxicated.
