A monkey smuggled into Israel and captured last Monday in the Bedouin town of Tel Sheva has died of tetanus, the Nature and Parks Authority said on Sunday.
Authorities have so far located four lion cubs and 10 monkeys in southern and central Israel, in what appears to be the country’s largest-ever wildlife smuggling case. No suspects have been arrested.
According to the Nature and Parks Authority, the monkey was in critical condition when found, suffering injuries from restraints used to hold it illegally. Despite extensive treatment, it died from tetanus, a disease that can also affect humans.
