Sources: Ofir Akunis to be named Israel's next UN envoy

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has designated Science Minister Ofir Akunis as Israel's next ambassador to the United Nations, according to senior government officials. Akunis will replace the current ambassador, Gilad Erdan, who will finish his four-year term next September. In the past, Akunis' name was mentioned as a possible candidate for the position, but he has denied it. However, senior government officials claim that the appointment has been agreed upon between Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Eli Cohen, and knowledgeable sources say that Erdan is not interested in extending his term and wants to return to Israel for family reasons.
