'Jews are the evil of the world:' Slovenia synagogue defaced with antisemitic graffiti

Antisemitic graffiti spray-painted on the medieval synagogue in Maribor; European Jewish Congress condemns incident as reminder of rising antisemitism in Europe

Antisemitic slogans were spray-painted this week on the exterior walls of the medieval synagogue in Maribor, Slovenia.
Among the hateful messages were phrases such as "Jews are the evil of the world" and "Death to Jews, glory to Slovenia." Another graffiti urged passersby to read the Talmud, a phrase commonly used by antisemites.

In a Facebook post, the synagogue’s management expressed sorrow over the incident: "Jews have always been a small minority in Slovenian history. It is remarkable that Maribor’s medieval synagogue has been preserved. For instance, few cities in Europe still have a well-preserved synagogue from the Middle Ages. The synagogue has been designated as a site of ‘national importance.’
“We are deeply saddened that the synagogue building in Maribor has once again been targeted by vandalism and offensive, threatening expressions. The incident has been reported to the police."

The European Jewish Congress condemned the attack, pointing to neo-Nazis as the likely perpetrators. “This heinous act of hate is a painful reminder of rising antisemitism in Europe, targeting even the smallest Jewish communities,” the organization said. “Such attacks insult not only Jewish communities but also the values of tolerance and respect that should define our societies.”

Slovenia has been in the spotlight for its political stance on Israel. It is one of the few European nations to officially recognize a Palestinian state. Prime Minister Robert Golob announced the move in May, making Slovenia the fourth country—after Spain, Norway and Ireland—to formally do so. The government also flew the Palestinian flag alongside Slovenian and EU flags outside its main administrative building in Ljubljana.
Additionally, last month, Slovenia petitioned to bar Israel from participating in the Eurovision Song Contest, further highlighting its anti-Israel stance.
