Staff Sgt. Lior Steinberg, 20, from Petah Tikva, Staff Sgt. Ofek Barhana, 20, from Yavne, and Staff Sgt. Omer Van Gelder, 22, from Ma'ale Adumim were killed in a powerful explosion in Jabaliya, with two additional soldiers moderately wounded. A force from Givati's Rotem Battalion encountered an IED in Jabaliya, and their APC caught fire. The soldiers jumped out unharmed, but a Humvee covering a fire truck that arrived to assist hit another IED - its occupants were hit, resulting in three casualties. Forces identified the area as a major IED field containing dozens of explosive devices. Steinberg and Barhana served as combat medics, while Van Gelder served as a squad commander.
