Outgoing Air Force Commander Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar said at the change of command ceremony that "October 7 was the greatest disaster we have experienced since the Holocaust. I will carry with me forever the profound meaning of that day. We were not there for the citizens. It happened on my watch, and at a time when the activation of the Air Force was my responsibility." According to him, "On October 7, the force was surprised, we were all surprised. For the first time in the history of the Air Force, our mission was to defend the country's citizens when the war was taking place within the country's territory."
