Eilat man accused of spying for Iran, filming Ovda Airbase for payment

Prosecutors say 23-year-old received hundreds of dollars to photograph sensitive sites, including an Israeli Air Force base where he worked, despite suspecting handler was linked to Iranian intelligence

State prosecutors on Monday filed an indictment against Ali Jaber, 23, of Eilat, accusing him of contact with a foreign agent linked to Iranian intelligence and carrying out assignments in exchange for payment.
According to the indictment, filed with the Jerusalem District Court, Jaber made contact with a foreign operative via Telegram after searching for work and began completing tasks for him in return for money transferred through digital platforms.

Prosecutors said Jaber photographed various locations, including a traffic circle in Eilat, and documented areas inside the Ovda Airbase, where he worked, as well as the route leading to the base.
He was also asked to photograph sensitive infrastructure, including security sites and residential areas, while receiving detailed operational instructions designed to conceal his activities.
In return, Jaber received several hundred dollars via PayPal and digital wallets.
According to the indictment, at a certain stage Jaber suspected that the individual he was in contact with was acting on behalf of Iran. Despite this, he continued communicating with the agent and carried out additional tasks for payment.
Jaber is charged with contact with a foreign agent and providing information to the enemy that could be beneficial to it.
“The prosecution emphasizes that at a time when the State of Israel faces ongoing security threats, any contact with hostile elements and transfer of information may assist the enemy and harm state security, and will therefore be treated with severity,” prosecutors said.
The investigation was conducted by the Shin Bet security agency together with the Jerusalem District Police’s special investigations unit.
