The Lebanese army said Monday its forces raided the homes of wanted individuals in two northern towns, seizing a large cache of weapons, including rockets, hand grenades, firearms and ammunition.
In a statement, the military said units, backed by patrols from the Directorate of Intelligence, carried out the operations in the towns of Al-Qasr, in the Hermel region, and Al-Asfourieh, in Akkar. The statement did not specify if any arrests were made or provide details on the identities of the suspects.
Lebanon’s army has been conducting security operations across the country as it seeks to curb the proliferation of illegal weapons, particularly in areas where armed groups and smuggling networks are active.
The raid was unrelated to Lebanon’s cease-fire agreement with Israel, which mandates that the army prevent non-state groups, namely Hezbollah, from maintaining weapons in the country’s south along the Israeli border.
