Elite Exped, the company that organized the expedition, confirmed the news today. Nine other climbers were killed in the avalanche. In 2019, Purja broke a world record by summiting all 14 of the world's highest peaks - each over 8,000 meters - in just six months and six days. The previous record stood at nearly eight years. He gained worldwide fame after a Netflix documentary chronicling his journey was released two years later.
