Israeli security forces arrested a senior Islamic Jihad commander during a counterterrorism operation in the West Bank early Thursday morning. The detained operative, identified as Muhammad al-Sharif, is suspected of orchestrating multiple attacks against Israeli targets and recruiting militants for the Palestinian terrorist organization.
According to the Israel Defense Forces and Shin Bet security service, al-Sharif was apprehended in a joint raid in the Jenin area. The suspect had been evading capture for several months and was allegedly planning additional attacks.
During the operation, IDF troops encountered armed resistance and exchanged fire with Palestinian militants. No Israeli casualties were reported, but two militants were killed in the firefight, according to Palestinian sources.
The arrested commander is currently being interrogated by security officials. Additional suspects were detained during the overnight raids across the northern West Bank, the military said.
