Avner Gat, whose niece Carmel Gat was abducted on Oct. 7 and murdered in Hamas captivity in August 2024, died suddenly in Be'eri at the age of 68. His family said 'he was born in the kibbutz and lived there his entire life, until 10/7. He survived the massacre alongside his wife Shari and their dog Toffee in the safe room, the only house in the Zeitim neighborhood that was not damaged in the massacre. This morning he was in Be'eri to clear out the house that was about to be demolished. During the evacuation, he went to the Be'eri printing house to find something that wasn't in the house — he collapsed and died in the kibbutz he loved so much.'
