The US and France are attempting to initiate direct meetings between Israel and Lebanon soon in an effort to reach a ceasefire and understandings under which the Lebanese government would disarm Hezbollah. The goal of the move is to stop the escalation and prevent a large-scale Israeli ground operation in Lebanon. Leading the contacts from the American side is Trump's son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner. Israel has not yet responded affirmatively, but the direction is positive. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked former Minister for Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer to coordinate handling of the Lebanese file and represent Israel in the talks. In Israel, they intend to expand activities in Lebanon regardless of the talks.
