The IDF published its investigation into the fighting at Yiftach Base and Erez Checkpoint on October 7, 2023, revealing that on the morning of the massacre, there were almost no combat soldiers at the two IDF bases in northern Gaza envelope. According to the investigation, most soldiers were combat support personnel, including cooks and drivers who were on weekend duty. They were not trained to independently block a large-scale invasion from Gaza, but nevertheless managed to prevent an even greater disaster. Despite the failures, the investigation conducted by Colonel (res.) Yaron Sitbon over the course of a year sheds light on the heroism during the battles, in which 13 IDF soldiers fell.
