IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir has decided to cancel his visit to the United States, scheduled to take place in about a week and a half, due to the security situation in Israel, Ynet has learned. Zamir was scheduled to meet in the U.S. with the commander of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the U.S. military, to discuss cooperation between the militaries on the Iran issue and other threats. However, Zamir informed his hosts that "in light of the security situation" and the heightened alert status in the IDF across all sectors, he believes it would be improper to be absent from the country and manage events remotely. According to a senior IDF official, "You cannot mobilize the army and fly abroad." The chief of staff made the decision before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's announcement about "an attack ahead of the elections."
