President Isaac Herzog decided to grant Elor Azaria's request and expunge the remainder of his criminal record period. Herzog stated that the decision was made "on the eve of Yom Kippur" and that Azaria will now be able to "continue with his life." The President's Office further stated that Herzog made the decision after "examining all the circumstances of the case and the considerations related to the request" and "after many years in which Azaria bore the consequences of his actions." It was noted that the president "believes that all the circumstances, the passage of time and the remorse he expressed justify allowing him to open a new page in his life." Azaria was imprisoned after he fatally shot a neutralized terrorist while serving in the IDF.
