The United States has condemned the decision by Brazil's Supreme Court to issue a house arrest order for former President Jair Bolsonaro ahead of his trial for the attempted government overthrow following the country's 2022 elections, which he lost to current President Lula da Silva. The US State Department attacked Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes on X, posting that "Justice Moraes, who abuses human rights and on whom we have imposed sanctions, continues to use Brazil's institutions to silence the opposition and threaten democracy. Imposing additional restrictions on Jair Bolsonaro's ability to publicly defend himself is not a service to the public. Let Bolsonaro speak!".
