Cabinet discusses death penalty for terrorists, key issue: judicial discretion or mandatory punishment

|
The Security Cabinet held a late-night discussion on the death penalty bill for terrorists, which passed its first reading in the Knesset. Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar said it is "a highly deterrent tool," and the IDF representative who presented the Chief of Staff's position noted: "There is no objection to the law." Government Secretary Yossi Fuchs said that "the main question is whether it would be better to include judicial discretion rather than making it a mandatory sentence." Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir argued that "it must be a mandatory punishment," while Minister Gila Gamliel remarked: "But Jewish citizens could also be executed." Minister Bezalel Smotrich said: "A Jew who works for Iran and commits murder against the State of Israel could be executed."
