The former mayor of Nazareth arrested as part of the "Money Maze" case is Ali Salam, also known as Abu Maher. He served as mayor from 2014 until 2025, when the Ministry of Interior decided to appoint a special committee to fulfill the role of mayor and city council due to the city's severe financial situation - and Salam was removed from office. Hundreds of police officers raided facilities of senior members of the "Bakri" crime organization in Nazareth last week, arresting senior crime organization figures, businessmen and former and current Nazareth municipality officials, including Salam. The detention of 13 individuals involved in the case has been extended until Wednesday.
