Tens of thousands of protesters marched through the streets of Rome in two demonstrations - one for immigration and one against - after a far-right citizens' initiative seeking to impose extensive sanctions against immigrants gained sufficient support to bring it to a parliamentary debate. The initiative calls for sweeping measures against foreigners, including forced deportations, incentives for leaving Italy and a broader policy that critics say could extend to legal residents as well. Several thousand protesters gathered for the anti-immigration march, singing the national anthem and many raising their hands in a fascist salute. At the rival pro-immigration demonstration, tens of thousands participated, including various leftist groups and labor unions, and some protesters waved Palestinian flags.
