Four years later: Lawmaker Ofer Cassif convicted of assaulting police officer at protest in southern Hebron Hills

|
The Jerusalem Magistrate's Court convicted lawmaker Ofer Cassif (Hadash) of assaulting a police officer under aggravating circumstances. According to the indictment, at a protest about four years ago in the southern Hebron Hills, Cassif requested to drive his vehicle toward the demonstration, but police officers prevented him from doing so. After an argument, Cassif got into his vehicle, drove forward toward a police officer and hit his leg. Later, the officer approached him and Cassif exited the vehicle and struck him in the head. The Jerusalem Prosecutor's Office argued that the assaults were intentional and rejected Cassif's claims that hitting the officer with the vehicle was accidental and that the strike was in self-defense. It further argued that the actions are not protected under his parliamentary immunity.
