A U.S. federal court has given final approval to a $2.8 billion settlement with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) that will allow academic institutions for the first time to pay student-athletes for commercial use of their name, image and likeness. District Judge Claudia Wilken in the federal court in Oakland, California, granted final approval to the settlement following a lengthy legal battle between the students and the association.
