Two American officials told The New York Times that as part of the emerging deal with Iran, Tehran has agreed to give up its stockpile of highly enriched uranium. The officials said the proposal on the table did not determine how Iran would relinquish the stockpile, and that discussion of the details was postponed to the next round of talks on the nuclear program. According to the report, Iran initially refused to include an agreement on uranium in the initial stage of the deal, but the Americans made clear through intermediaries that without an agreement on the stockpile—already in the first part of the deal—they would resume military operations.
