More than 10 premature babies hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit at Ichilov Hospital were diagnosed in the past week as carriers of antibiotic-resistant Klebsiella bacteria. The bacteria can cause urinary tract infections, bloodstream infections and pneumonia, among other conditions, ynet has learned. Three of the premature babies developed illness while the rest are carriers but not sick. The NICU at Ichilov continues to operate normally. The incident was reported to the Ministry of Health. The outbreak was discovered after three premature babies developed symptoms and were found to be infected with the bacteria. The remaining premature babies were tested for the bacteria and several tested positive. The condition of the sick infants is stable.
