After close competition: Ilia Smirin crowned Israel's Blitz Chess Champion

At the end of a dramatic day and a close competition that was decided only in the final round, Grandmaster Ilia Smirin was crowned Israel's Blitz Chess Champion. The 58-year-old Smirin from the Ashdod Chess Club finished the championship, which took place in Afula, in first place with 10 points after 12 rounds. Smirin finished ahead of Grandmaster Avital Boruchovsky (Kfar Saba Chess Club) and International Master Michael Kalenberg (Beersheba), both of whom also finished with 10 points but trailed him in the overall tiebreak.
