Israel and the United States tapped former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to replace Iran's leadership following the war. This was reported by The New York Times, citing American sources who noted that Israel developed the ambitious plan and Ahmadinejad even provided advice on the matter - but the move quickly unraveled. On the first day of the war, Israel struck Ahmadinejad's home - where he was also injured as a result - in an attempt to free him from house arrest. According to the report, after that strike Ahmadinejad "had a change of heart" about the intention to replace the government.
