Maj. Ella Waweya, deputy head of the Arabic media department in the IDF Spokesperson's Unit, known by the nickname "Captain Ella," will assume the role of IDF Arabic spokesperson, replacing Col. Avichay Adraee, who has held the position for the past 20 years. Waweya has effectively been groomed for years to replace Adraee, who has served in his current role since 2005 and has been described by some as the most recognized Israeli in the Arab world. In an interview at the Ynet, Yedioth Ahronoth and Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) Defense and Service Conference last July, she said: "The media arena is a battlefield. It's a war that is no less difficult than other places."
