To fund war expenses: Government approves dramatic budget cuts across ministries

Gad Lior, Itamar Eichner|
The government approved an additional budget allocation of 30.8 billion shekels for the defense system due to the ongoing war and the implications of the conflict with Iran in June. As a result, the deficit will increase from 4.9% to 5.2%. A significant portion of the sum, 1.6 billion shekels, will be allocated for humanitarian aid to Gaza Strip residents. To finance part of this move, the government approved a series of significant cuts across a wide range of areas, with the most substantial reductions being made to coalition agreements and government ministry budgets. More than half a billion shekels will be cut from coalition agreement budgets. This represents an overall cut of 11%, from approximately 5 billion shekels to 4.5 billion shekels. Ministers Ben Gvir, Yoav Kish, Haim Katz, Serlauf and Amichai Eliyahu voted against the measure.
