An Israeli citizen was arrested last Tuesday in the Turkish part of northern Cyprus on suspicion of involvement in illegal embryo trafficking. Simultaneously, authorities raided a local clinic and arrested two Turkish citizens – the clinic director and a local doctor. The three detainees are suspected of being involved in an attempt to remove embryos from Turkish Cyprus without the required permits. They were brought before a court and their detention was extended by one day to continue the investigation, collect evidence and review security camera footage. The Israeli was arrested at Ercan Airport in the Turkish part of the island while attempting to leave for Mexico via Istanbul – in his possession was a special container for transporting embryos, bearing the inscription Life Parcel. Four embryos preserved in four different test tubes were found in the container.
