The Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court sentenced Haim Sirotkin, a former soccer player who was charged and convicted of reckless and negligent acts with a vehicle after running over protesters demanding the release of hostages nearly two years ago, to one year of actual imprisonment and a four-year driver's license suspension. The court ordered him to pay compensation of 20,000 shekels to one of the victims and 4,000 shekels to four others. The court determined that precisely when a police officer who had offered to guide and help him exit the intersection was not by his side, Sirotkin pressed hard on the gas pedal and crossed the intersection. According to the verdict, he 'continued driving for more than 10 seconds until he stopped his car.' The sentencing noted that the evidence presented did not allow for a definitive determination of why he did so.
