Alcohol advertising on billboards, buses banned

New regulations approved by Knesset allow only 'informative' alcohol ads - without models, text, or praise for product

The Knesset Economics Committee has approved regulations that will significantly reduce advertising of alcohol ,which come on the heels of a law restricting advertising of alcoholic beverages passed three months ago.
According to the new rules, all advertising of alcoholic beverages on billboards and buses will be banned.

Media outlets will still be allowed to run alcohol ads, but only "informative" ones, without models, text, or praise for the product.
Furthermore, the new rules stipulate that strong alcoholic drinks (15% or more) carry a warning that excessive alcohol consumption presents a health danger and could pose a fatal risk.
Author of the bill MK Danny Danon welcomed the approval of the new regulations and said: "Newspaper headlines about 12-year-old kids who are taken to the hospital because of alcohol will become a thing of the past."
According to the Knesset Research and Information Center, some 60% of Israeli teens consume alcohol, and Israel is ranked No. 2 among European nations for alcohol consumption by 11-year-olds.
