Smart unveiled the Model 5, its third electric model since its re-establishment as an electric vehicle manufacturer under the joint ownership of Geely and Mercedes, at the Beijing Auto Show.
Currently defined as a "concept for display," a production version is expected to be unveiled in the second half of the year and will reach Israeli shores early next year.

The vehicle will be built on Geely's dedicated SEA platform, although Smart has yet to reveal details about the external dimensions. Nonetheless, these dimensions are anticipated to be significantly more generous than previous models from the brand, enabling it to compete against rivals like the Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Details of the powertrain have not yet been released, but it will feature a dual electric motor setup providing all-wheel drive.
The battery, with a capacity of approximately 100 kWh, will offer a theoretical driving range of about 550 kilometers, based on a high-voltage system (800V) for the first time in the manufacturer's history, allowing for ultra-fast charging from 10% to 80% in just 15 minutes.
Like the terrain it's designed for, the concept car's styling is undoubtedly more pronounced than the production model it will be based on, now featuring a more muscular and combative appearance compared to the rounded and softer lines of Models 1 and 3, with unique lighting units across the front and rear.

The aggressive bumpers with specialized underbody protection are unlikely to make it to production, while the bulging wheel arches wrap around large, aggressive off-road tires (BFG AT) measuring 31 inches on unique 18-inch rims.
The prototype is loaded with off-road accessories including a robust roof with an LED light bar, and it also features a pair of cables connected to the engine hood to prevent the front windshield from shattering due to branches.
The passenger compartment now seats four (though the production version will seat five), with rear doors that open in reverse to the front (suicide doors), which are highly unlikely to be offered in the production version. The driver's environment includes a pair of OLED touchscreens, one central and the other for the passenger, as well as a modest digital dashboard.

According to the manufacturer, the front seats are designed to provide long-term comfort with heating, ventilation and massage features, and incorporate airbags.
Our take: Under the joint ownership of Geely and Mercedes, Smart appears to be revitalizing with a lineup of electric, modern and market-relevant models. The Model 5 seems to push the envelope further with larger dimensions, a dedicated platform and an advanced powertrain system. All these elements are set to position Smart strongly in an important and profitable category where it has never been before.
Now, we wait to see how far Smart will dare to preserve the appealing design of the concept car. In our opinion, if they manage to avoid drastic changes, it could potentially be a major hit.
