Genesis has revealed the X Gran Coupe and Cabriolet prototypes at the Seoul Motor Show, signaling a bold move to compete with none other than Bentley’s Continental GT. The luxury Korean automaker has showcased its ambition to elevate the brand to new heights in the premium segment.
Design and interior highlights
The exterior design of both prototypes incorporates Genesis’ signature motifs, including their distinct lighting units. Inside the driver’s cabin, familiar elements like the climate control display maintain continuity with the brand’s established aesthetic. However, there are notable differences: unlike conventional Genesis models, the dashboard and touchscreen are not connected in these prototypes.
Genesis has gone to great lengths to emphasize the unique materials and design inspirations in the interiors. For the coupe, the finishing is inspired by olive trees, using a combination of green and brown leather that has undergone processing with liquids derived from olive oil production. Wooden trim panels are embedded with illuminated olive leaf patterns on the doors, adding a luxurious and artistic touch. And for the convertible? Its cabin design draws inspiration from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, showcasing colors and textures reminiscent of fine wine. Yes, this is exactly what Genesis claims.
Technical details and platform
While Genesis has not disclosed detailed technical specifications, the prototypes are expected to use the platform and powertrain from the G90, the brand’s flagship model. This includes a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine paired with a mild hybrid system (48V) that features an electrically driven turbocharger for reduced lag. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and permanent all-wheel drive with a rear limited-slip differential.

The suspension system will be the most advanced offered by Genesis, featuring adaptive air springs that adjust stiffness based on the selected driving mode. Additionally, the system includes a front-facing camera that scans the road to optimize ride comfort. An active rear-wheel steering system is also included, reducing the turning radius and improving directional stability during high-speed cornering.
Our take
Despite being a relatively young player in the luxury automotive market, Genesis has quickly established itself with a modern and diverse lineup of high-quality vehicles that have been well-received. However, the brand’s pace of innovation appears to have slowed in recent years, especially when compared to its sister companies Hyundai and Kia, which continue to push boundaries.
Currently, Genesis lacks models that truly ignite excitement comparable to the offerings in Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz showrooms. The introduction of a performance division was a step in the right direction, and these luxurious coupe and cabriolet models are another move to elevate the brand further up the luxury hierarchy. And frankly, it’s a move that couldn’t come a moment too soon.
