The Defense Ministry has signed a deal with Israeli defense contractor Elbit Systems to equip IDF Apache and Black Hawk helicopters with advanced defense systems, at a cost estimated at NIS 200 million ($53 million) over five years.
As part of the project, the helicopters will be fitted with upgraded threat detection and countermeasure systems designed to protect against complex combat scenarios. These include automatic threat identification, jamming and heat-seeking missile deflection systems.
The system, an enhanced version of an existing platform previously used on passenger aircraft, now features automated missile tracking and disruption capabilities, replacing the older model that relied on pilot alerts followed by manual flare or chaff deployment.
The agreement is one of several procurement initiatives currently being advanced by Defense Ministry Director-General Maj. Gen. (res.) Amir Baram.

Brig. Gen. Yehuda Elmakias, head of R&D at the Defense Ministry's Directorate of Defense Research and Development (DDR&D), said the program is part of Israel’s broader effort to upgrade airborne platform protection through DIRCM (Directed Infrared Counter Measures) systems.
“This technology reflects years of investment aimed at addressing current and future threats. We’ll continue developing it with the Air Force and industry partners to ensure operational freedom across all fronts,” he said.
Oren Sabag, Elbit’s Executive Vice President General Manager ISTAR and EW, said: “We’re proud to continue supporting the IDF with our advanced self-defense and DIRCM systems, enhancing the safety and operational capabilities of the Black Hawk and Apache fleets.
“The many contracts we've secured over the years attest to the maturity and effectiveness of our solutions, solidifying our role as a strategic partner to the Defense Ministry and global militaries.”
