Israeli defense company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Romania’s Defense Ministry have signed a framework agreement worth about 2 billion euros, or $2.3 billion, for the supply of Rafael’s Spyder air defense systems.
The mobile air defense system, developed and manufactured by Rafael, is designed to counter short- and medium-range aerial threats. Under the agreement, Rafael will provide the Romanian military with multiple Spyder air defense batteries, though the company did not specify the exact number.

The deal includes launchers, interceptor missiles, radar systems, training programs and logistical support for the Romanian forces that will operate the system. According to Rafael, deliveries of the new systems for use by the Romanian military are expected to begin within three years.
Spyder is a mobile air defense system based on Rafael’s Python-5 and Derby air-to-air missiles, which were adapted for ground-based air defense missions. The system is designed to respond to a wide range of aerial threats, including fighter jets, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles and precision-guided munitions.
Rafael says the system can effectively protect strategic assets in complex environments and under changing operational conditions.
Romania joins a growing list of countries in Europe and Asia that have acquired the Spyder system in recent years. The system has previously been sold to countries including the Czech Republic, India, Vietnam and Cyprus.
