At 54, Cameron Diaz returns to Hollywood without trying to look like her younger self

The ’90s star walked away from Hollywood at the height of her fame; now, with a third child and new films on the way, she's back with a more relaxed style and little interest in recreating the image that made her famous

Cameron Diaz, the star of the 1990s and early 2000s, turns 54 this week while continuing a Hollywood comeback. After more than a decade largely away from movies and red carpets, Diaz is steadily returning to public life.
She now has a third child, born via surrogacy, and a growing slate of projects that includes the Netflix action comedy with Jamie Foxx, another comedy alongside Keanu Reeves for Apple TV and a return as the voice of Princess Fiona in the next Shrek film. For now, at least, Cameron Diaz is back.

Where did she go?

Diaz broke through in 1994 with The Mask, quickly becoming one of Hollywood’s most recognizable blonde stars of the romantic comedies of the 1990s and early 2000s.
My Best Friend’s Wedding, There’s Something About Mary, Charlie’s Angels, Shrek, In Her Shoes, The Holiday, The Other Woman and a string of other hits made her a favorite with American audiences. She seemed to deliver everything Hollywood wanted at once: talent, sex appeal, box-office draw and action-star credentials.

Then she decided she had had enough. Diaz did not disappear because Hollywood stopped wanting her, or because she had aged out of favor and been pushed aside by an industry notoriously unforgiving toward actresses past a certain age. The opposite was true. At the height of her popularity, she simply decided that maintaining the life required of a major movie star was not a life she wanted.
She walked away from what she later described as the role of being Hollywood's “managed product”. She married musician Benji Madden, started a family, wrote two books, launched a wine brand and largely spared herself the industry’s familiar ritual of scrutinizing women who dare to age beyond 40.

Now she is returning, but not to reconstruct the old Cameron Diaz. Not the pace, not the face and not the image. This is Diaz 2.0, and she appears determined to be nobody’s product but her own.

How does she dress now?

The Cameron Diaz of 2026 dresses like a woman with nothing left to prove. There is no attempt to recreate the body or face that defined much of her earlier public image, as seen with stars such as Demi Moore and Nicole Kidman, but the return of a woman who no longer seems interested in being judged by anyone else’s standards.

Diaz remains sexy and athletic, with the same blue eyes and wide smile that became part of her screen identity. The difference is that she now presents those features without appearing particularly interested in hiding what age has added.
Across interviews and in the books she has written, Diaz has repeatedly tried to shift the conversation away from how to “look young” and toward how to live well in your body over time.

She has said that stepping away from acting gave her the freedom to stop constantly thinking about maintaining her face. That does not make her an ambassador for a completely intervention-free approach to aging. Diaz has spoken about experimenting with Botox and other cosmetic treatments over the years.
She is not opposed to aesthetic procedures, but she appears unwilling to turn their maintenance into a full-time occupation. She still participates in the machinery of Hollywood glamour, but she does not pretend that it can erase time.

Over the past two years, Diaz has also moved away from the distinctly Californian look that once defined her, with its exposed skin, deep tans and sexier silhouettes. The replacement is more conservative, but also more relaxed.
Her recent red carpet wardrobe features a great deal of black, long coats, wide-leg trousers and soft volumes. There are fewer minidresses and plunging necklines, but still designer clothes, heels and her enduring red lipstick. She has grown older, not moved to a remote farm.

At a Berlin screening in January 2025, Diaz wore a head-to-toe Gucci look consisting of an extremely long coat, a semi-sheer blouse with a bow and dark jeans. Choosing denim rather than an evening gown designed to demand attention felt like a clear declaration of fashion intent.
A month later, she appeared on the cover of Vogue Mexico in pieces from major luxury labels including Valentino, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana and Stella McCartney. Most of the looks were black and white, presenting Diaz in a style that felt polished and luxurious but simultaneously loose and unforced.

In March 2025, Diaz attended the fall show of her designer friend Stella McCartney, marking her first appearance at Paris Fashion Week in 13 years. She chose a red midi dress with an asymmetrical neckline, topped with an oversized white wool coat.
Then, in April 2026 in New York, she wore a sculptural black A-line dress by FFORME, further defining the boundaries of her new style: precise and grown-up, but with just enough eccentricity left intact.

Diaz is not a fashion innovator. She is not a trendsetter in the traditional sense, nor does she appear to be chasing visual surprises. What she does understand is clothing as something that should work with the body and the person wearing it.
Like her professional comeback, her fashion comeback works because she is not trying to reproduce the woman she used to be.

What comes next?

It is not yet clear whether Diaz’s return to movies and the public eye is permanent or whether this is simply a temporary reappearance before another retreat. Either way, her return is welcome. Her recent films may not be emerging as artistic landmarks or major showcases of dramatic acting, but Cameron Diaz herself had been missing from the Hollywood landscape.

Cheers or jeers?

At 54, with three children, new films, polished style and a face that neither apologizes for the passing years nor tries to turn back time (but still insists on her signature red lipstick), Diaz shows that a successful comeback is about getting where you want to be, not returning to where you were. And that is certainly worthy of applause.
