The 98th Academy Award nominations were announced Thursday, ahead of the Oscars ceremony to be held on March 15 in Los Angeles, and in a surprising twist the film "Sinners" leads with 16 nominations, an all-time record. It is followed by one of the top favorites this year, "One Battle After Another" by director Paul Thomas Anderson, with 13 nominations.

This year’s nominations list also includes an Israeli presence: filmmaker Hila Medalia was nominated in the Best Documentary Short Film category for her movie "Children No More: Were and Are Gone." Medalia welcomed the nomination: “I am grateful for the recognition of the film and proud of the opportunity I was given to spotlight a social initiative of a group of brave women who embody humanity and compassion in a complex reality, and who demand that we face the children who ‘were and are no more.’ The sense of mission that accompanied me and the film team throughout the documentary process will continue to serve as our compass moving forward.”
The film, which has already aired on Britain’s Sky network, follows peace activists in Tel Aviv who silently protest the killing of children in Gaza.
In addition to Medalia, Israeli director Meir Levinson‑Blount also landed a nod in the Best Live Action Short Film category with his film "Butcher’s Stain," which centers on an Arab butcher accused of tearing down posters of Gaza hostages. In August, the film by Levinson‑Blount, who is a third‑year student at the Steve Tisch School of Film at Tel Aviv University, won the Best Live Action Short Film award from the Student Academy Awards.
After the nominations were released, Israel’s Minister of Culture and Sport Miki Zohar reacted in a post on X: “Be surprised all you want. The two Israeli films nominated for Oscars — are against Israel. This is exactly why the film reform I am leading is so important and critical.”
Meanwhile, the Tunisian-produced film "The Voice of Hind Rajab" was nominated for Best International Feature Film. It tells the story of a Palestinian girl who was killed in Gaza along with her family, and includes real audio recordings of her speaking with representatives of the Red Crescent.
As expected, Paul Thomas Anderson’s "One Battle After Another" was predicted to lead this year’s nominations — but it was Ryan Coogler’s "Sinners" that ended up dominating, with nominations in Best Picture, Best Director, acting categories, screenplay, and multiple technical categories. Both films were also box office successes: "One Battle After Another" grossed $205 million, Anderson’s highest to date, while "Sinners" brought in over $368 million.
Other standouts include "Marty Supreme" with eight nominations (including Best Actor for Timothée Chalamet, who already won the Golden Globe for the role), "Hamnet" with seven nominations (including Best Actress for Jessie Buckley, also a Golden Globe winner), and "Sentimental Value", also with seven nominations. Also noteworthy is the acclaimed Brazilian film "The Secret Agent", which premiered last week and has already won the Golden Globe for Best International Film and Best Actor for Wagner Moura, who is now nominated for an Oscar as well.
This year, a new category was added to the Oscars — Best Casting — with casting directors of "Hamnet," "Marty Supreme", "One Battle After Another," "The Secret Agent," and "Sinners" all nominated.
The Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, and will be hosted once again by Conan O’Brien, returning after successfully hosting the 2025 Oscars.
