Jewish football star forced out of Mormon college over premarital sex

Jake Retzlaff, the first Jewish starting quarterback at BYU, leaves after admitting to consensual sex—violating the university’s strict honor code; he now hopes to revive his NFL prospects with Tulane amid lingering fallout from a dropped civil suit

Jaren “Jake” Retzlaff, the first Jewish starting quarterback at Brigham Young University, has transferred to Tulane University after being suspended for violating BYU’s strict code of conduct, ending a breakout season at the Mormon-affiliated school.
The 22-year-old athlete, who had become a fan favorite in Provo, Utah, not only for his performance on the field but also for proudly representing his Jewish identity, left BYU after he was slated to miss the first seven games of the 2025 season. The suspension stemmed from Retzlaff admitting to consensual sexual relations—an act that violates BYU’s honor code banning premarital sex.

Retzlaff, a former JUCO standout, had been embraced by BYU's administration and teammates, encouraged to share Jewish traditions and wear a Star of David on campus. But the university, known as one of the most religious in the United States, takes violations of its moral code seriously.
Complicating his departure, Retzlaff was accused in May of sexual assault by a woman who claimed he attacked her at his home in November 2023. In a civil lawsuit, she alleged that Retzlaff met her through social media, and after a gaming session, he sexually assaulted her despite her protests. She sought $300,000 in damages.

Retzlaff’s attorney denied the allegations, calling the suit an extortion attempt targeting the quarterback's rising profile. The university launched an internal review, treating the claims with gravity. In June, the lawsuit was dropped by mutual agreement after evidence surfaced of months of amicable text exchanges between Retzlaff and the accuser following the alleged incident.
During the proceedings, Retzlaff admitted to having consensual sex with the woman, triggering the automatic suspension under BYU’s honor code. He chose to transfer rather than serve the suspension.
Tulane University in New Orleans conducted a thorough review before accepting Retzlaff. His longtime relationship with Green Wave head coach Jon Sumrall factored heavily into the decision. The team, considered strong in its own right, needed a new quarterback after starter TJ Finley was suspended in April following an arrest for possession of stolen goods. Finley is now seeking a transfer.
Despite the turmoil, Retzlaff remains determined to pursue an NFL career. Known for his previous endorsement deal with Manischewitz matzah, he now faces the challenge of reviving his prospects under the national spotlight in what will be his final year of college eligibility.
His story—marked by promise, controversy, and resilience—continues to inspire young Jewish athletes navigating identity and expectations in the competitive world of American football.
