Green Day slams Israel in Coachella performance

'Runnin’ away from pain like the kids from Palestine': Aging punkers alter lyrics of their 2004 track Jesus of Suburbia to reference Gaza war

American punk rock band Green Day used their performance at the Coachella music festival on Saturday night to make a political statement, altering the lyrics of one of their songs to reference the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
During a rendition of their 2004 track Jesus of Suburbia, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong changed a line in the song’s lyrics. Instead of singing the original line, “Runnin’ away from pain when you’ve been victimized,” Armstrong sang, “Runnin’ away from pain like the kids from Palestine / Tales from another broken home.” The lyric change was met with cheers from the crowd.
The move was not unprecedented for the band, known for its politically charged performances. In 2016, during the U.S. presidential election, Green Day altered the lyrics of their song Holiday to protest then-candidate Donald Trump, referring to him as a “white supremacist.”

More recently, in 2023, they modified the chorus of their hit American Idiot, swapping the line “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda” for “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda.”
Last month, while performing in Melbourne, Armstrong again modified Jesus of Suburbia, this time to mock U.S. Vice President JD Vance. The line “Am I retarded or am I just overjoyed?” was changed to “Am I retarded or am I just JD Vance?”
