Walter Koenig, the actor who became a science-fiction icon as Ensign Pavel Chekov on the original Star Trek television series, has died at 90, his representative confirmed Monday. Koenig died at his home in North Hollywood, Los Angeles, with his daughter and niece by his side.
Born in Chicago in 1936, Koenig joined Star Trek during its second season in 1967, playing the young Russian navigator aboard the USS Enterprise. His character, with his distinctive accent and fierce pride in Russia, became a favorite among viewers and an unusual symbol of cooperation at the height of the Cold War, when Soviet and American rivals appeared together as crewmates in the show's optimistic vision of the future.

Although the original NBC series ran for only three seasons, from 1966 to 1969, it developed a devoted worldwide following. Koenig returned as Chekov in seven feature films, beginning with Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979, helping establish a franchise that would span generations.
His career extended well beyond the Enterprise. Koenig played the sinister telepath Alfred Bester in the 1990s science-fiction series Babylon 5, wrote for television and published books, including Chekov's Enterprise. He also appeared regularly at fan conventions, maintaining a close relationship with the community that had kept Star Trek alive long after its original broadcast.

Fellow cast member George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu, paid tribute to his longtime friend. "My heart is heavy," Takei wrote, remembering Koenig as "a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend." His agent also praised the actor's kindness and enduring appreciation for fans.
Koenig received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2012. His wife, actress Judy Levitt, died in 2022, and their son, actor Andrew Koenig, died in 2010. He is survived by his daughter, Danielle.
