Diane Keaton died from pneumonia, her family revealed Wednesday, about a week after the beloved actress passed away at age 79.
“The Keaton family is deeply grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support,” the statement read. The family added that fans wishing to honor Keaton’s memory could donate to animal welfare organizations, noting that she “loved her pets and consistently supported the animal community.”
Keaton rose to fame in the 1970s through her roles in The Godfather films and her collaborations with director Woody Allen. She won the Academy Award for best actress for her performance in "Annie Hall"(1977). Throughout her long career, Keaton also starred in "The First Wives Club," several Nancy Meyers films, and the Book Club comedy franchise.
Keaton never married. “I’m the only woman of my generation who has remained single all her life,” she said in a 2019 interview. “I’m happy about it. I’m an oddball. Even in high school, I knew I didn’t want to be someone’s wife.”
She had high-profile relationships with Woody Allen, Warren Beatty, and Al Pacino. Keaton is survived by her two adopted children, daughter Dexter and son Duke.
