Following a series of roster moves this summer, the Portland Trail Blazers are expected to elevate Israeli forward Deni Avdija’s role significantly for the upcoming NBA season.
According to the basketball news site Rip City Project, Avdija established himself as Portland’s primary offensive option late in the 2024-25 season. In 20 games after the All-Star break, he averaged 23.3 points, 9.7 rebounds and 5.2 assists — numbers that the site described as “borderline All-Star” and likely to continue next season.
Portland’s offseason moves reflect a clear vote of confidence in Avdija. The Blazers traded away high-scoring guard Anfernee Simons, who averaged 19.3 points last season, in exchange for veteran Jrue Holiday. While Holiday is recognized as a strong defensive presence, his offensive output was more modest, averaging 11.1 points per game.
The team also parted ways with center Deandre Ayton, whose offensive style was seen as slowing the pace of play. In his place, Donovan Clingan, known for his defensive skills and passing ability, is expected to step into the starting lineup. Rookie Yang Hansen, praised for his exceptional court vision, is also expected to contribute significantly.

Additionally, the Blazers allowed Dalano Banton, regarded as a player who impeded the flow of the offense, to leave the team, further clearing the path for Avdija’s leadership role.
Rip City Project summarized the Blazers’ approach: “It’s apparent that Portland is now making Avdija the entire focal point of the offense.”
The team aims “to create a smoother, more team-oriented and diverse offense that will also allow young guards Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe to have potential breakout seasons,” the site added. But above all, Avdija is positioned to be the team’s clear No. 1 offensive option and primary playmaker for the first time in his career.
