Recently, Zoë Kravitz stepped out onto the streets of New York wearing low-rise, ankle-length jeans, a white cropped T-shirt and ballet flats. I would not normally dwell on such an esoteric event if it hadn’t flooded my feed from every possible direction.
Fashion lovers went wild trying to figure out where the jeans were from, setting off a frenzy of speculation. Eventually, the mystery was solved: They were a vintage Alexander Wang style. “I bought this pair 10 years ago,” one blogger announced, while another quickly sent her followers a link to an almost identical pair available in stores. “This is the denim formula everyone will want to wear this fall,” she declared.
The obsession with the everyday looks of Kravitz, 37, an actor, director and someone who practically owns the word “cool,” has been overflowing for some time. Kravitz, who is also the daughter of rocker Lenny Kravitz and actor Lisa Bonet, runs errands around her Brooklyn neighborhood, the paparazzi start snapping and the internet erupts. British Vogue recently even published an article titled “How to Dress Like Zoë Kravitz This Autumn.”
On the surface, the looks are extremely simple: Adidas shorts, a white or black T-shirt, sunglasses, a baseball cap and flip-flops, all accompanied by a phone in hand and earbuds tucked into her ears. At first glance, who put any effort into this at all? It’s basically just: I stepped out to buy coffee.
But of course, that is the illusion.
Every Kravitz look is carefully constructed, a precise mix of New York chic, a touch of rock ’n’ roll, a hint of luxury and just the right amount of sex appeal, never too much. Beneath a faded T-shirt, a diamond necklace will casually appear. The baseball cap is really a nostalgic wink. The bag and sunglasses come from luxury labels Saint Laurent, for which Kravitz is an ambassador, or The Row.
Everything blends together organically and seems to reflect her personality authentically rather than any particular trend. The dreadlocks, tattoos and indifferent expression complete the picture perfectly.
As if all that were not enough, since last April Zoë has officially been engaged to Harry Styles, one of the hottest pop stars on the planet, and the relationship has naturally sent interest in her soaring. The two were immediately declared a power couple, with their style described as coordinated not through matching pieces but through a shared vibe.
I am already looking forward to seeing what the two of them wear to their wedding. Kravitz, incidentally, has been married before. The look was stunning, the marriage apparently less so.
Until they say “I do,” there is always another disposable coffee cup-and-headphones look to follow.
