Israel's Dolgopyat bags gold medal at European Artistic Gymnastics Championship

For the second time in a row, 25-year-old Artem Dolgopyat picks up the top prize for his floor routine in the continental tournament after edging out stiff competition in Munich, fighting off injury

Israeli gymnast Artem Dolgopyat won the gold medal for his floor routine at the European Artistic Gymnastics Championship on Sunday, retaining his title from the tournament's last edition.

  • Carrying a foot injury, Dolgopyat performed short of his usual best in the qualifying rounds, but compensated for the same by executing his floor routine to near perfection in the final, earning him a score of 14.966 and the top spot on the winner's podium in Munich. The Israeli athlete received 6.100 points for difficulty and 8.866 points for execution.

    Krisztofer Meszaros of Hungary came in second, while Jake Jarman of Great Britain finished third.
    The 25-year-old is one of the most celebrated athletes in Israel's history, further extending his impressive title haul, which includes a historic gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, another gold in the European championship's last edition in 2020, and two silver medals at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in 2017 and 2019.
    “I’m exhausted, but happy. I did what I could," Dolgopyat said in an interview after the competition. "I have some issues with my foot. I only prepared for the championship two weeks in advance, but I did it and I’m happy. Thank you all for rooting for me.”

    Another Israeli gymnast who managed to pick up a medal at the continental competition is 16-year-old Dmytro Dotsenko, who finished in first place in the horizontal bar routine with a score of 13.666.
    Dotsenko also finished fourth in the parallel bar final with a score of 13.366.
